Many cat GPS trackers come with a fixed subscription that renews automatically. Spotter works differently. A GPS tracker for cats determines its location via GPS, WiFi and cell towers (LBS) and sends it over the 4G network using a built-in SIM card. You click the device onto the collar and see your cat’s position on the map in the app and online environment.
You attach the tracker to a cat collar with a safety buckle and put it around your cat’s neck. You then see on a map in the app where your cat is, you can zoom in to street level and look back at the route it walked that day.
A tracker with its own SIM card works anywhere there is mobile coverage, throughout Europe and beyond. Accuracy is highest outdoors. Indoors, in a shed or under dense vegetation the signal can be weaker and the location less precise.
A GPS tracker has no distance limit: as long as there is mobile coverage, you can see where your cat is – whether that is two streets away or abroad. That is the big difference with bluetooth tags, which only reach a few dozen metres.

The rule of thumb is that the tracker and collar together weigh no more than 2 to 3% of your cat’s body weight. For an adult cat of four kilos that is roughly 80 to 120 grams. Most cat trackers stay well below that.
The smallest models for cats are about four to five centimetres long and weigh between 25 and 35 grams. Do not only look at the weight: a small device with a small battery needs charging more often. The balance between size and battery life is what counts.

That mainly depends on how often the tracker sends a location. With an interval of a few minutes you usually get a few days; with a wider interval that increases to more than a week. A motion sensor saves the battery while your cat sleeps.
