Many families are not going on holiday abroad this year, but staying in the Netherlands. A great moment, then, to be a tourist in your own country. For every parent it is a nightmare to lose their child, for example in a swimming pool, theme park, at the beach or the zoo. During the holiday period, it unfortunately still happens too often that children get lost. In this article we give you 6 tips to prevent this problem.

Tip 1: Make arrangements

When you arrive at a destination that is unfamiliar to your child, it is good to make arrangements. Explain what your child should do if they lose you. Agree on a meeting point in case you lose sight of each other. If your child understands this and knows what to do, you can make arrangements about how far they are allowed to go.

Tip 2: Provide points of recognition

After you have agreed where to meet, it is good to walk around and explore the area, so that your child can orient themselves. Point out landmarks to your child, such as the tall slide or, at the beach, the recognisable children’s sign.

Tip 3: Pay close attention

It may sound obvious, but the most important way to prevent your child from getting lost is to pay close attention. Walking hand in hand reduces the chance that your child runs off. At the beach or in a playground that is harder, but do not let yourself be distracted by your phone or something else, because a child can be lost within a few seconds.

Tip 4: Make sure your child stands out and that you can describe them

A child with a bright yellow or orange shirt is more recognisable than a child wearing a white or black shirt. When your child is lost, it is important that you can describe their clothing well. People will ask what your child looks like exactly and what they are wearing. So it is wise to take a photo of your child in their outfit at the start of the day.

Tip 5: Give your child a phone number

It is handy to write your phone number on your child’s arm in the morning before you go somewhere, or to put a sticker on their clothing. Nowadays you can also have personalised bracelets or a necklace made with the phone number on it.

Tip 6: Spotter GPS Watch

Want to keep an eye on things while your kids are busy in an outdoor playground, zoo or at the beach? With the Spotter GPS Kids Watch you always know where your child is and you can get in touch with your children. Nice for you and for your child. The watch works online and via the Spotter app. Thanks to its unique design, small size and light weight, it is a pleasant and attractive watch that children enjoy wearing. In addition to the track-and-trace function, you can also call each other, set up zones and more.
