The 2G network is still widely used for a range of applications, such as GPS trackers and communication systems. We explain why 2G is important, why and when it is being phased out, and how the transition to newer technologies, such as 4G, is taking shape. In addition, we discuss what the future of 4G holds and how this network will continue to evolve in the coming years.

Why are 2G and 4G important?

Mobile devices, such as GPS trackers, use both the 2G and the 4G network for efficient data transmission. The 2G network continues to play a crucial role; it is reliable and has a wide range, which makes it ideal for basic location services.

On the other hand, the 4G network offers the same. It is everything that 2G also has, but with significantly higher data speeds and improved connectivity. This is essential for modern applications that need to transmit larger amounts of data. Given the increasing demand for faster and more advanced services, the 4G network is becoming increasingly important for the performance of mobile devices.

Why is 2G disappearing?

Mobile network technology is continuously improving. New networks such as 4G and 5G offer significantly improved performance, such as higher data speeds, more network capacity and lower latency. This means there is less demand for older networks such as 2G, because modern devices often use the newer networks.

Telecom providers want to manage their network capacity and costs more efficiently. Maintaining an outdated network such as 2G is expensive and not sustainable in the long term. As a result, the phase-out of the 2G network is a logical step. In many places, 3G was ended first, followed by the 2G phase-out. This therefore means that the 2G network is being discontinued.

Currently, there are still over 10,000 2G masts and around 16,000 4G masts in the Netherlands. The exact numbers can vary depending on the region and the telecom operator. The phase-out of 2G affects not only mobile communication, but also other technologies that depend on these networks, such as Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

When are the main providers stopping 2G?

KPN has announced that it will end its 2G services on 1 December 2027. This is a step KPN is taking to use the capacity of its networks more efficiently and to focus on more modern technologies such as 4G and 5G.

Vodafone Netherlands has indicated that the switch-off of 2G connectivity on their network will take place at the end of 2026 at the earliest. The exact date may vary per country.

Odido (formerly T-Mobile) already switched off its 2G network in 2023.

As for other European countries:

Austrian and German providers, as well as those in Poland and Spain, have scheduled their 2G phase-out for the end of 2030.

Belgian providers have the discontinuation of 2G planned for at least the end of 2027.

In France and Norway, the discontinuation of 2G is expected in 2026. With the exception of Orange in France, which is shutting down its 2G network in 2025, as in Sweden.

The United Kingdom has not yet given a specific date, but has set the goal of phasing out 2G by 2033 at the latest. In countries such as Italy, Greece, Ireland and Slovenia, no exact dates for the phase-out have currently been announced.

Sources: Total Telecom, Telecompaper, KPN.

Reliable connectivity with Spotter’s roaming SIM cards

Spotter uses advanced roaming SIM cards for its GPS trackers. These SIM cards are designed to function seamlessly within all EU countries, including the Netherlands, and make use of a wide range of mobile networks. This enables Spotter systems to remain operational on the 2G network for as long as possible, as long as coverage is available via the provider.

When the 2G network is no longer accessible, the devices automatically switch to 4G, provided they are suitable for it. Some devices cannot do this due to old systems and therefore do not switch to a new network.

Conclusion

The future of 2G and 4G has significant implications for mobile technologies. While 2G connectivity still remains valuable because of its robustness and cost-efficiency, it is clear that the network will largely disappear in many European countries by the end of 2030. This confronts users of devices such as GPS trackers with the need to switch to 4G-compatible solutions in good time to ensure uninterrupted service.

With the implementation of modern roaming SIM cards, devices can switch smoothly from 2G to 4G whenever necessary, if the hardware supports this. This approach assures users of continuous connectivity and reliability in their devices. It is essential that both consumers and businesses are aware of this transition and the associated changes in network infrastructures, in order to make optimal use of the benefits that 4G and future networks offer.

In this article we answer questions about the future of the 2G network and its phase-out, as well as the role of 4G in the coming years.
